Nitwit ran a brave race today, he led the field in the Stayers Hurdle for a circuit & a half, jumping quickly for Tommy but tired 2nd time round as they ran out of the back straight, the soft ground just catching him out in this Grade 1 Championship race.
His big day came at Wetherby in the West Yorkshire Hurdle but it was still fantastic to see him in front here with his ears pricked and travelling comfortably a length in front of Sam Spinner. It was so nearly a massive win for the North when Joe Colliver was still in the lead 2 out but Sam Spinner was just found out by the favourite, Paisley Park. There were 5 or 6 Northern runners today at Cheltenham but, dissapointingly so for the North, Top Ville Ben was the SOLE Northern runner yesterday at the Festival.
Ben had jumped beautifully until his departure at the 5th, it was a mistake similar to his hurdle falls, and took us by surprise as he had been really good at his fences up to now in his 3 chase starts. Luckily him and Sean were fine and Ben galloped round riderless for most of the race, sensibly going round the fences when he was able to. He will school again at home before possibly heading to Aintree and he could be one for The Charlie Hall at Wetherby next November as an early season target if we can get him back on track.
A few more photos from our three days…
We had 4 other runners today, Discay 3rd & Bertie Blake 4th at Market Rasen, Kilcullen Flem 4th in the 4 miler at Hexham and Epsom Des Mottes just getting tired on his first start in the Novice Hurdle at Hexham. All horses back safely.
