11 Runners Today!

***UPDATE***

Unfortunately the first 3 runners didnt make it to the track in time despite leaving seriously early. The horrific weather conditions creating serious traffic problems, and the second lorry is yet to arrive in time!

Second Update…..The second lorry didnt arrive in time either, so our 4 in the 1.40 were sadly also non-runners. Niven made it out onto track for a respectable 4th and Tommy reports it will have him sharpened up nicely for his next outing.

The traffic denied the first 3 runners getting there for their run.

Quite possibly are largest team of runners in one day, it will be a busy day both on track and back home for the staff left to run the yard. 9 go to Newcastle for a mix of NHF and ‘Jumpers Bumpers’ and a further 2 head down to Southwell to run later tonight.

The first two to run at Newcastle are First Glory and Wynyard Icon in the NHF races. It will be First Glory’s first run since joining us as an Irish point winner back in November, so we hope to see her go well for her English debut, Tommy Dowson rides today. Wynyard Icon can hope to build on her debut run here 3 weeks ago where she will have learnt a good bit and has the addition of a tongue tie to help her out a little today, Ross Chapman on board. Next to run we have 4 in the jumpers bumper – Kangaroo Valley with jockey Colm McCormack, Pennine Cross with Tommy Dowson, Stitch Up with Ross Chapman and our top class hurdling mare Rayna’s World (currently favourite as i type) with Joe Williamson riding. She would very much be the pick of the race on her hurdling form and has plenty of speed as a dual flat winner, but Moon King looks to be a worthy rival if still in the good form of late. Following this is Niven with another jumpers bumper. He was 4th here in a more competitive jumpers bumper in February last year with the form from that race working out strongly, the winner now being a 151 rated hurdler. We could see him go close if enjoying the change of event from the jumps and returning to form, Tommy Dowson on board. Another to watch with interest will be Wye Aye, who is a character to train and can often be seen bouncing about pre-race wearing his hood with Colm cautiously keeping a lid on his antics before the off. Despite his quirks he has ran many a good race since joining us late 2019 and is enjoying a top season with a great win and 2 3rds. It would be no surprise to see him run another great race under usual jockey Colm McCormack if taking to the jumpers bumper. To finish off at Newcastle we have stable star Bushypark who we will have our fingers crossed can make it a 5-timer today. Nicely avoiding the punishment of the handicapper for this level weights jumpers bumper today, along with Joe Williamson taking his 7lb claim off, he should clearly have another very good chance and is also favourite as i type.

Southwell has our 1-2 duo from early December Lady Camelot and Shine Baby Shine, returning this time in separate races – can Lady Camelot go one better this time? She came a very close 2nd to Shine, beaten half a length, with this being a drop in class too she will hopefully do well if still in the good form she looks to be in at home. Shine will also be enjoying a drop in class today and we hope for a repeat of her C&D win here back in December. Both ridden by Rossa Ryan – jockey aboard Shine for her recent win.

The duo at Southwell early December

Best of luck to all horses, jockeys, owners and connections, hopefully a winner or two amongst them or it will be a very quiet tea time in the Kirby house tonight! A safe return home of most importance as always, especially with the bad weather today making the transporting so much more tricky, they all set off extra early for a safe trip.

Big Ears now a non-runner, being saved for another day o have her debut.

The newly launched Philip Kirby Racing Club horse ‘Green Oaks Top Cat’ is enjoying her exercise as you can see below, quite enthusiastic to find herself in a nice green field for a canter!
