Wednesday 27th June
With temperatures soaring there is plenty of hosing down going on at the yard and we are being careful not to let the horses get too hot.
We’ve got two runners today – thankfully no 3 mile chasers but Nautical Nitwit will be ready for a shower after his 4.20 Hurdle race at Worcester and Fingal’s Cave will be glad he’s not running quite so far in the 3.00 at Carlisle.
Nemean Lion showed improved form to run a good 3rd at Southwell On Monday and we feel the horses are starting to come ‘to’ now after a quiet period, we can confidently put it down to the oil seed rape in the area which is thankfully now waning. We’ve seen a similar thing happen the last two seasons, but with Gonn Away’s close 2nd also at Hexham, things are definately on the up 👍🏻. It has been frustrating after a fantastic Winter & Spring but the horses look tremendous and there’s no bugs or illness – these things happen and we know the winners will be flying in again soon. Nautical Nitwit’s big summer target is at Cartmel in a months time so he may prove to need his comeback this afternoon although he has definately surprised us when fresh in the past. Fingal’s would prefer softer ground but he handles this surface and is dropping to a good mark after some unlucky recent efforts.
We did enjoy a double yesterday though – courtesy of our daughter Indy Kirby who romped home in her Sports Day Flat race against the girls. She was then handicapped by an up in class against the boys in the Obstacle race but still came out on top! We do like our winners and she has never been short on speed or competitive spirit!
Izzy rode a tremendous round on her pony Freddie to go clear at The Royal Highland Show but was just pipped to the post by 1 mark and had to be content with 2nd place. No HOYS ticket yet but there are plenty more chances and competition is fierce.
A former PKR Horse did triumph though! We were sent this lovely photo of Inch Manor whom we rehomed to Scotland several years ago, taking the Royal Highland Ex Racehorse ‘ROR’ Championship. What a proud moment.
We have some further exciting Ex Racer triumphs coming in a post later tonight….
Phil is attending the Tattersalls Derby Sale today – the Castleton Bloodstock ‘Gaspara’ x Shirocco 3 year old sells tomorrow and we’ll be hoping he makes a nice profit on his foal purchase price. We’ll update with photos from the sales and how much ‘Garry’ makes in the ring, he’s a grand stamp of horse and very racy & athletic.
Further photos from the yard this morning….
