A blank day at the office: Enzaal picked up some prizemoney on his first start for us at Beverely; it was his first try at this sort of ground and we will be hoping it dries up over the next few weeks, an Indian summer would be ideal for a lot of our Autumn flat runners. The neck rugs are on the horses and before long it will be clipping time for our jumpers, the blades will be going off in the post to be sharpened later this week in preparation.
We are hoping for better luck with four runners tomorrow – Embsay Crag, Oratory and Triple Eight at Pontefract: Venutius at Ayr. The ground is very different at both tracks – soft in Scotland and good to firm in West Yorkshire . Venutius needs a change of luck and we believe he should handle the ground conditions as he won well at Haydock on this surface previously. The race looks difficult but there are always plenty of runners towards the backend of the season – last chances to run before winter and Ayr is always a popular venue. We can’t praise Ayr enough for their hospitality to Owners, it is second to none – a fabulous sit down meal with drinks, all complimentary, we had a fantastic time there when Goldan Jess won and there is a lovely hotel to stay in as well if you don’t fancy the drive back that evening.
It will be a busy day at Pontefract with the three going, perhaps our best chance of a winner could be Embsay Crag who bolted up here last time and just didn’t handle Carlisle’s shorter trip so well. he needs to bounce back to the previous effort. Oratory having his first run for us and Triple Eight – a model of consistency this season – make up the 3, although you can tell its getting hard winning these competitive Autumn races as some of our best summer horses are in the grip of the handicapper after winning races all season – you can’t keep winning forever with them unless they are called Frankel.
Call It On didn’t buck anyone off today at Castleton – he has been extremely fresh since coming back into work at Dibble Bridge and dropped everyone bar Carl so far ( I know his owners will think ‘Oh no!’ when reading this as he is normally a gentleman and they are having him back as a riding horse eventually”!) However, Colin is normally very good, and hopefully a return to Sharp Hill and harder work tomorrow will see him behaving himself properly again!
Here is our luxurious staff room at Dibble Bridge…Adam, Kim and Rachael having a quick bite of lunch after first lot. We do actually have a portacabin but sit is currently being taken over by a giant rabbit ! He gets a new hutch next week and its back to a coffee inside with the heater once the snow comes.
Pictured here is Adam Forster on Cool Operator (Howard) – he is one of our new staff members at Castleton, and a very experienced rider who also teaches: he has qualified for Horse of the Year Show next month and rides there the same day as Platinum runs in the big race. Howard is looking well and enjoys leading the way out on his roadwork.
