Brilliant Lady Buttons

FOUR from FOUR!

Lady Buttons in top spot

It was a day of firsts at Doncaster yesterday – Lady Buttons added this valuable Graded race to her already bulging CV and Tommy made his first ride on her a winning one, deputising for regular rider Adam who is on the recovery list. She certainly made us sweat sweat this time, as having gone away to win her race in good style, she remembered where the paddock was again and slowed down once she passed it, thinking her job was done. Tommy became more animated in the saddle, we all started shouting, the crowd held their breath and luckily the post came in time.

The Sky Sports TV cameras captured huge relief on the face of Tommy as he walked back in, receiving a congratulatory handshake from his good friend Ross Chapman as they walked back up the track to the Winners enclosure.

This was a second Graded win for Tommy this season having captured the West Yorkshire Hurdle on Nautical Nitwit, and it’s been a hugely important season for him. It was naturally a bittersweet moment for Adam who has partnered Lady B to every one of her previous 11 wins, but he loves the mare and they are good friends – he would not have wanted anyone else on board more than Tommy to enjoy this moment, keeping it an ‘in house team win’ for our yard and a brilliant day for everyone here at Green Oaks.

A lovely moment walking back in

And of course, after a few drinks,  we could put this continuation of form down to three things – Buttons running in her lucky new browband and Phil wearing his new Christmas Lucky Winner pants and Lady Buttons socks! We’ll spare you the pants photo but it’s definately worth a look at the socks…I am thinking they will be making a reappearance at Cheltenham in March and not before.

Phil will be asked many times in the coming weeks which race she will go for at Cheltenham and it’s testament to the Mares class and versatility that she is entered in the highest grade both over hurdles and fences at The Festival. Phil and her Owners Keith & Jayne will make a decision nearer the time if it’s the Mares Hurdle or The Champion Chase for Buttons, and for now she can have an easy week or two and get freshened back up for her big Spring date. Let’s hope for a clear run and all to go well from now till March.

Check back in for her winning video later plus Phil and Tommy’s interviews.
