Batteries recharged – News and Wetherby review part 2! What an exceptional performance from Nautical Nitwit to win The Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle for his enthusiastic Owners, The Birrafun Partnership. Nitwit may be nearing his 10th Birthday but there’s no doubt at all that he has yet again put in a personal best to score in this high class race. He was a bit untidy at his hurdles and Tommy did miracles keeping him off the floor at the last, but he didn’t lose a bit of ground for his mistake and galloped all the way to the line, comfortably holding the Nicholls horse under Byrony Frost. It was a day for Yorkshire Trainers and with Brian Ellison winning the Charlie Hall we had a clean sweep of the three feature races staying in the North- a welcome change! This was also a notable win for our Conditional Tommy and although he couldn’t claim in this Graded race, Phil had no hesitation giving him the chance and he certainly took it. Here is his winning video:
Nautical Nitwit also won Best Turned Out for Meg, and she was delighted to get a prize from Wetherby who are so good on big days like this – Meg also gave an interview on ITV 4.
Next up we had 2 in the last, a field size that had been demoted to just 3 runners! Our other horse Zig Zag went off favourite with Wemyss the outsider of three, the Twiston Davies horse sandwiched in the middle. Tommy jumped off to make it and Adam kept the other horse in his sights all the way, but as it happened, when Wemyss was challenged he just kept finding and eventually forged clear. His jumping was superb for a horse that is still a relative novice over timber, and he fairly winged the last, giving his Owners a great thrill. Zig Zag kept on the one pace for third, only just behind the 2nd and there are races in him this Winter.
Wemyss has plenty of options from 2m 4f – 3miles and he prefers a decent surface as he bounces off it. Trackwise he is versatile as he goes right or left handed and is another example of what nice hurdlers his Sire, Champs Elysees is breeding. This is his video below –
Monday’s News – a busy morning as usual but a chance to pause for breath with no runners today. I watched new horses from Goffs UK, Midas Maggie and Ice Pyramid pulling out on third lot, they have settled in well. I was also impressed with the lovely big 4 year old, Magellan from Tattersalls.
We had Owners visiting and watching their horses on the gallops. Yesterday at Carlisle we had Suggestion in the handicap hurdle, he was a bit dissapointing for connections and may benefit in future from the application of cheekpieces or blinkers as he seems to be switching off in his races and staying on when it is too late.
