2nd January – updated

Not quite a winner today but Monty did not go down without a fight and giving tons of weight away to younger rivals, made the running into the home straight and was eventually beaten just 7.5 lengths into 3rd in Ayr’s feature race carrying 11 stone 12, the winner carrying 10 stone 1 and the 2nd carrying 10-7 . He showed a little hesitancy in his jumping early on, probably remembering the fences last time, but he warmed to his task and was soon hurdling fluently under an excellent ride from James Reveley. Phil reported him 100% afterwards and he didn’t seem to have had a hard race at all despite the ground, James was not too hard on him once he was booked for third. Its a long way back from Ayr but the little two staller drives like a car and its not a bad run with plenty of motorway.

Just the one runner  tomorrow – Oscar O’scar heads to Newcastle for a handicap hurdle. We’ve appealed to the handicapper to be a bit more lenient on him but it hasn’t happened yet and he has struggled off his mark so far this term and seems to get dropped in tiny amounts. Birthday Guest is another who needs help from the handicapper, especially when you consider his flat mark, although he jumped well for a long way yesterday at Catterick and put his last time out fall behind him.  Celtic Agent ran a blinder for 3rd and was staying on like a train, his jumping is steadily improving. Adam Nicol rode them both.

I took this photo of Chloe’s Image with Becky Dempsey up – Castleton today. As we have not found a suitable home for her to go eventing she is going back into training to see if she can get some more 1’s on her CV, she may have a future as a broodmare as the family is doing well. She has matured into a superb looking 5 year old.

Earlier news:

Good luck to The Well Oiled Partnership with ‘Stoped Out’ today at Ayr in the 2m4f handicap hurdle – Monty carried top weight as he is right at the top end of the 0-140 handicap so it will be hard work for him in the ground but he knows where the wining post is and you couldn’t rule it out. He is flying at home and we are all hopeful of another good run from him, he is absolute legend.  further update this evening…..
