Musselburgh Shetland Derby

imageWe had a brilliant day on Sunday with our daughter Izzy riding in her first race – no fairytale start, they came 6th and although Midge was definately the ‘pick of the paddock’ he has proved he is sadly no Frankel of the shetland pony world despite being very fit and not breaking sweat! With it being his racing debut we didn’t really know how he would measure up as its hard to gauge him against the racehorses but at least they weren’t last and Izzy pushed him out right to the line and came back absolutely buzzing and desperate to have another go! Here are some photos of her day and a video of a brilliant experience when you are just ten years old. She had qualified for Hickstead the day before on her pony Freddie, so she was just pleased that Midge raced with the others and gave her a great thrill. She has not given up on her Olympia dream but its going to be hard work as its jumping next time – her first Shetland Grand National qualifier is Northumberland County Show on May 30th. lets just say he needs to come on a lot for his debut!
