Tuesday & Wednesday News & winners !

Whoshotthesherrif winning a valuable prize at Carlisle for Sean Quinlan & Owners Hambleton Racing

It’s been such a good day I don’t know where to start..and that coming off the back of ‘Whoshothesheriff’ winning the big race at Carlisle on Monday. Following a number of seconds over the weekend it was great to get back on the scoreboard in such a decent race, and Sheriff jumped beautifully for a second time out novice, staying on best up the stiff Carlisle hill to make it a memorable day for his Owners in http://www.hambletonracing.co.uk  even though most of them had to watch it from the comfort of their homes – certainly not the same but I think most of us feel we are just relieved to be racing and able to watch the sport we love so much in whatever form we currently can. Sheriff was unlucky not to land a decent prize last year, and this imposing horse by Dylan Thomas has always promised plenty, the switch to chasing proving the catalyst for his first Class 2 win and hopefully the first  of many to come. Sean gets on so well with him and watching the race you felt he always had that ‘bit more up his sleeve’ for after the last. Sheriff was led up  looking immaculate by Stacey who rides &  looks after him at home , and she also brought him proudly into the winners enclosure top spot.

Earlier in the card, Abington Park had completed safely in the novice and he is one step closer to being able to contest novice handicaps, and Winfola perhaps signalled a return to the flat as she appears to be reserving her best form for that sphere although a flatter track may help.

Today we enjoyed 2 winners and a second from 3 runners – the best possible outcome as we had 2 in the same race at Newcastle!

It was particularly notable as our 7lb Conditional Joe Williamson rode his first winner for us, and this was achieved in fine style down at Lingfield aboard the Goffs purchased ex-Godolphin Shamardal gelding, ‘RAIFF” who has been named after his Owner, David Platt’s son.

Joe Williamson wins on RAIFF

This was a welcome winner for David who had the sadness of losing his superstar ‘December Second’ earlier this year. ‘Raiff’ is a great big horse who has took time to grow into himself, and following a wind op he really seemed to act well on the all-weather surface. Being a good free mover by Shamardal, Phil expected this to bring out the best in him and although it was a long overnight trip, we will go anywhere to get that winner providing the horse is a good traveller and the Owner is keen to go….Phil tells me there is another bumper back here in a few weeks and we would be happy to come back with a penalty for todays win.

The opening race at Newcastle saw us field two stayers,’Wemyss Point’ and ‘Ravenscar’ and it was the latter who came home with her head in front under a positive ride from Silvestre de Sousa.

Ravenscar wins from Wemyss Point

This was Ravenscar’s first win, and she is a really nice mares hurdler in the making as well as being more than capable of picking up good prize money in these decent staying contests.

Wemyss was not for being beaten too far by a girl, and he stuck his neck out for second in another step forward following his wind surgery last year. He may have another run or two on the flat before resuming hurdling when good ground is on offer. Pedigree specialists will note that Wemyss is a half brother to the top class hurdler, Allmankind. This 2nd place was thoroughly enjoyed by his Owners, The Green Oaks Partnership.

First and second getting ready to go back home to Catterick

Tomorrow (well it may be today now as I am typing this very late)  we have two at Ayr – My Strong Man and Adelphi Prince in the opening handicap hurdle. Both would have each way claims if building on their first race of the season. There is already one beaten as there is a non-runner amongst one of the fancied ones! Safe return & good luck to their Owners, The Platinum Partnership and Barry & Virginia Brown.
