Top Ville Ben in full flight
27th December….After a fantastic Boxing Day we set off to Wetherby with 7 runners but after walking the course, Phil decided fairly early on to make Lady Buttons a non runner in the Castleford Chase and she would wait for Doncaster on the 29th. Our headline act for the day would now be TOP VILLE BEN and he did not disappoint with the most superb round of jumping for a novice, making all under Sean Quinlan and being left clear in the straight when his nearest rival fell at the second last. Ben already had the race in his safekeeping at this point, and it’s not too far fetched to think that one day he could prove a proper Grand National prospect. He is a keen goer who is a scopey jumper and stays all day, his technique over a fence is eye catching as you will see on the video below. Let’s hope he can keep progressing and jumping safely to become a top chaser in the making – he’s made a very bright start to his career so far and is just a 6 year old.
Making it a double on the day was DISCAY who shouldered top weight to record his second hurdles win for us this season. Despite being the least fancied of our two runners at 33-1 (2nd fav Bertie Blake perhaps didn’t act on the tacky round) Discay travelled well within himself throughout the race and was the one up keep an eye on as the field rounded the home bend. He was lucky not to throw the race away with a couple of mistakes but his attitude certainly wasn’t in question as he really battled on to hold off a late challenge from Border Victor. His Owners have been very patient with him through a couple of years of niggling injuries but he is repaying their faith now.
