Lady Heidi wins the Silver Tankard at Pontefract

What  an amazing day – Lady Heidi for Hardisty Rolls II wins the big race at Pontefract on just her third career start. Under a beautiful ride from Silvestre de Sousa,  the filly stretched well clear of some top colts, and was going away even further at the finish to score by 2 and three quarter lengths.  This was a great result for all concerned, another big win for the yard and a huge boost for Phil and our team who  work so hard to achieve these results. There will  be plenty of celebrating in Middleham this evening!

Racing Post Comments:

Willie The Whipper landed this Listed prize in 2012 and went on to finish fifth in the French Derby, while third placed Top Notch Tonto chased home Olympic Glory in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
The heavy ground meant this contest was a real test for these juveniles.

LADY HEIDI, the only filly in the field, looked highly tried on only this third start but she stayed on strongly from the rear to pull clear inside the final furlong. There certainly looked to be no fluke about this, as the field went a solid gallop and she saw the trip out better than her more fancied rivals to win her first race. Her handler is making a name for himself this season and he looks to have a decent one to go to war with in 2014.

Its exciting to dream but the form of this win means Lady Heidi should be considered a live  Oaks contender for next year,  and the way she was seeing out this trip in such determined style on soft ground would suggest the further half mile next year should prove no problem to her.

A double would have been the icing on the cake but it wasn’t to be and Venutius was beaten but not disgraced in 5th on ground that would have been very testing for him, although he has won on soft in the past. He needs some further assistance from the handicapper but this looked a step in the right direction and he may well head to Wolverhampton on his next start.
